Interior Design Styles That Bring the Outdoors In

One of the most important aspects of a great rustic cabin interior is honoring the outdoors from within. Looking around a log cabin interior, you should see a variety of natural materials rounding out the home decor. From wood floors to antlers above a stone fireplace, interior cabin design should always fit in with the surroundings.

Common design styles used for these types of spaces include modern farmhouse, modern rustic and coastal.

Renovating a Rustic Log Cabin with Renovation Hunters

Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods partnered with Outdoor Channel’s first-ever home renovation show – Renovation Hunters – to renovate small cabins and hunting camps for family homeowners across the country.

In a recent episode of our American Hardwood Advisor podcast, Hal Shaffer (host and managing partner/co-creator of Renovation Hunters), Kevin Tarkovich (lead contractor on Renovation Hunters) and Chris Filardi (managing partner/co-creator of Renovation Hunters) stopped by Studio 3B to spill behind-the-scenes secrets from the second project of the new series. The team, who ranged from experienced DIY-ers to expert craftsmen, visited Critz, Virginia to renovate a 172-year-old lakeside cabin.

Rustic Cabin Interior Design Ideas

Whether you’re remodeling a log house or want your living room to feel like a cozy cabin, here are some interior design ideas to bring your rustic-style dreams to life.

Character Grade Wood Flooring

When crafting a rustic cabin interior design, flooring plays a crucial role in setting the tone for the entire space. Character grade wood flooring is an excellent option for achieving that cozy, lived-in look synonymous with rustic cabin interiors.

Character grade wood is known for its knots, mineral streaks and other natural imperfections that add unique character and charm. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, character grade wood flooring is incredibly durable and able to withstand the wear and tear of high-traffic areas, allowing it to last for generations.

Rustic Kitchen Ideas

Looking for design ideas for your rustic kitchen? Start with the cabinetry. Choose kitchen cabinets made from natural wood like oak, maple or hickory, and finish them with a natural stain that enhances the wood’s grain pattern and imperfections.

Another option is to distress your kitchen cabinets, using techniques like sanding, scraping or staining to create a weathered and worn appearance that gives the cabinets an aged, rustic look.

Try open shelving and glass-fronted cabinets to add a touch of old-world charm. Plus, this allows you to display your collection of vintage kitchenware or antique pottery. By combining these techniques and materials, you can create a rustic kitchen that is both functional and charming — and the perfect place to cook and gather with family and friends.

Butcher Block Countertops

Butcher block countertops are made from wood strips that are glued together to form a solid surface. The wood strips used in butcher block countertops can be arranged in a butcher block or plank top style, and these types of countertops are extremely durable, easy to maintain and provide a warm, natural feel to any kitchen.

Butcher block countertops are popular because they fit perfectly with the warm, natural aesthetic of a log cabin interior. They provide a cozy, welcoming feel to the kitchen and pair well with other natural materials, such as wood flooring and  cabinetry.

Natural Backsplash

A good backsplash is a great way to add personality and character to a rustic kitchen. By choosing natural materials with unique textures and patterns, you can create a warm and inviting space that reflects the beauty of the outdoors. Stone, brick, reclaimed wood and tile are all backsplash options that can add that extra touch to your rustic kitchen.

Classic Log Cabin Decor

Decorative elements enhance the natural beauty and cozy, warm atmosphere of a log cabin interior by bringing a touch of the outdoors inside. Whether you’re looking for wall art to add a pop of color to your space or decorative elements to showcase your love of the outdoors, these ideas for rustic decor pieces are sure to bring charm and personality to your log cabin interior.

Shiplap Paneling

Shiplap paneling is a great way to spruce up any house interior, especially in a cabin. Shiplap siding can have a rough-hewn, natural look that fits perfectly with the warm and cozy aesthetic of a rustic home.

It can be used in a variety of ways in rustic home design:

    • Install it on an accent wall to add texture to the space.
    • Use it throughout the room to create a cohesive, rustic look.
    • Leave it unfinished or paint it in a variety of colors to match the overall design of the space.

Stone Fireplaces

Stone fireplaces are an iconic feature of rustic design often found in log cabins, chalets, mountain lodges and other rustic-style homes. They fit perfectly into the warm and cozy aesthetic of this type of design and add a touch of natural beauty to any space.

Using stone in a fireplace creates a sense of nostalgia, as stone has been used in fireplace construction for centuries. The rugged appearance of stone can provide a striking contrast against other elements in the room, such as wood paneling or furniture.

Natural Color Palette

A rustic interior design typically features warm, earthy tones that reflect the natural beauty of the outdoors. These colors create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, evoking a sense of comfort and relaxation. Common color palettes used in rustic home design include shades of brown, green, olive green, red, burgundy, tan and soft orange.

A rustic color palette is warm, earthy and inviting, with a focus on natural tones and textures. By using these colors in combination with natural materials, you can create a welcoming living area that reflects the beauty of the outdoors.

Bedroom Ideas

When it comes to cabin-style design ideas for bedrooms, the focus is on creating a comfortable space that feels like a rustic retreat. Start with the focal point of any bedroom: the bed frame. Wooden bed frames or wrought iron frames with a distressed finish make the space feel lived-in and welcoming. And let’s not forget about the classic bunk room – filled with one or more bunk beds to accommodate the entire family!

Cozy bedding is also essential for creating a warm and inviting space. Look for bedding in natural materials like cotton, linen or wool with patterns and textures that reflect the natural beauty of the outdoors. By incorporating natural materials, warm lighting and cozy textiles, you can create a space that feels like a getaway in the woods.

Dining Room Ideas

A rustic dining room is all about creating a warm and inviting space where family and friends can gather to enjoy a meal together. So, of course, it all comes down to the dining table.

A dining table made out of natural materials like hardwood brings the entire home design together.

Accents, such as a centerpiece made from natural materials like wood or stone, can add the finishing touch to the dining room. Consider using elements like branches, pinecones or wildflowers to decorate the space.
