4 Hunting Cabin Ideas for the Rustic DIY Enthusiast

A rustic log cabin isn’t just a great place to spend hunting season – it’s a great place to make memories away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Whether you’re building your hunting lodge off-grid or on-grid, it’s important to take some time with the cabin design. The perfect hunting cabin can be a generational getaway not just during hunting season – but year-round – if you take time and care of the exterior and interior design.

See the Charm of a Small Cabin For Yourself

Baird Brothers is no stranger to the rustic charm and beauty of a log home. In addition to having many employees who enjoy the great outdoors, we’ve had the opportunity to work alongside the Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters on a few log cabins and camps – and the beautiful results are enough to make you want to start planning a full-time move to your own rustic hunting lodge!

Watch below to see how one of Season 1’s log cabin homes came to life after upgrading the cabin design with unique 21st century amenities.

1. Add a Front Porch to Make a Tiny Home Feel Bigger

Part of the purpose of a log cabin home is to experience the great outdoors – so your floor plan should definitely include outdoor space. Adding a front (or even a back) porch to a small cabin gives you a comfortable, relaxing space to connect with nature. It also helps a small space feel a whole lot bigger!

2. Make Room For Everyone in Your Hunting Cabin

Part of the fun of having your own hunting cabin is sharing it with your favorite people. So, one of the most important things you can do with your rustic cabin is make sure that everyone has a place to lay their heads.

With a little bit of DIY know-how you can outfit your cabin with bunk beds to give your hunting camp a real camp feel. Add a pull-out sofa (or two) and your living room can be a comfortable sleeping space, too. See how one of our recent renovation projects did just that for a well-deserving family!

3. Keep Your Small Hunting Cabin Cozy Year-Round

No matter where you’re building – whether it’s in Louisiana or Alaska – things can get chilly in the winter. Adding a reliable wood-burning stove is a great way to lean into the rustic appeal of a log home while keeping your guests warm.

Adding thick area rugs to the living room, bedroom or entryway can help increase warmth through a bit of added installation. Want to go above and beyond, consider a bear or cowhide area rug (whether they are faux or the real deal)!

4. Make the Most of Your Entryway

If you’re designing a small hunting cabin, you want to make the most of every square-foot. If you have an entryway built into your cabin’s plans, this is also the perfect way to incorporate storage or expand for additional space.

Lining your entryway with shelves or cubbies for shoes, coats and other essentials is a great way to make use of limited space. If you have additional time (and money) to spend, this can also be an area that gets a complete overhaul, just like you’ll see in our Tionesta Project with Renovation Hunters.

In an effort to add additional space for family members (like mentioned above), we worked with the Renovation Hunters’ team to close in the entrance of the cabin – which was previously a concrete pad. The result was a usable four-season space that incorporated pull out couches and room to hang out comfortably!
